Yuzhou's Unique Porcelain Heritage

Yuzhou is renowned for its distinctive porcelain, particularly the celebrated Jun ware, one of the Five Great Kilns of the Song Dynasty. Originating in the Tang Dynasty and reaching its zenith during the Song Dynasty, Jun ware finds its roots in the historic town of Shenhou in Yuzhou, Henan Province. During the Northern Song Dynasty, Jun ware became an exclusive commodity for the imperial palace. In the world of collectors, there is a saying: "Gold has a price, Jun ware is priceless." According to incomplete statistics from Yuzhou, over 60 pieces of Jun ware have been presented as national gifts, and many treasures are housed in the National Museum and the Palace Museum. In the past decade, auction records for Jun ware have frequently exceeded tens of millions of RMB.

Jun ware's precursor, Tang Dynasty's Tang flower porcelain, is often referred to as the "source of Jun ware." The Tang Dynasty Jun ware pieces are characterized by their majestic forms and practical designs, primarily jars and plates. By the Song Dynasty, the glaze showed hues of red in blue and purple in red, with a milky, lustrous glaze and dignified shapes reflecting a simple, rustic beauty. In the Jin Dynasty, Jun ware became known for its rough, grand, and unrestrained style. The Yuan Dynasty pieces were larger, with thicker, uneven glaze.

Unique intangible heritage of Jun porcelain

The magic of Jun ware lies in its kiln transformation (the glaze's color changes during high-temperature firing due to variations in temperature and humidity), earning it the reputation of "one color into the kiln, ten thousand colors out of the kiln." Ancient poets often described its color charm with phrases like "the purple of the sunset turns into green clouds." The color artistry of Jun ware is primarily achieved through kiln transformation, where different colors naturally blend and collide, creating a harmonious and natural visual effect.

Jun ware's evolution marked the transition from civilian kilns to imperial kilns, securing its place as the foremost among China's Five Great Kilns. Shenhou town's main attraction is its Jun ware culture and its ancient history. Recognized as one of the Five Great Kilns of the Song Dynasty, Jun ware originated in Shenhou, with archaeological excavations there named one of China's top ten discoveries in 2001. As early as 1979, Shenhou was included in Henan Province's eighteen tourist routes, and in recent years, it has been designated as one of the three major tourism brands by Xuchang City. In line with the provincial government's directive on cultural industry development and Xuchang City's "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" for cultural tourism, Yuzhou has proposed to brand "Jun ware culture," use the ancient town of Shenhou as its platform, develop a Jun ware industrial cluster, and promote tourism to make Shenhou a unique cultural industry base and renowned tourist destination, showcasing the charm of "a thousand-year-old town with Jun ware culture."
